Workshops case studies

Linda Neale and the Derbyshire L.E.A. S.E.N Training Day (June 2005)

One For All return to Derby yet again – It’s becoming our second home! This time we have to meet our biggest challenge yet – A workshop for a whole hour! Not a problem. We decide to expand our material and include our experiences of university life to get people thinking about the consequences of education in the big wide world. Maresa’s English degree is also put to good use, as she prsents a selection of evokotive poetry that certainly stir some emotions! (see featured items) It seemed to go down a treat.

One participant said,

‘Maresa’s poems really got me thinking and brought a tear to my eye’

Ollie told us,

‘ One For All’s workshops are going from strength to strength. I’ve worked with them on a few occassions and their work just keeps improving!’

Portland Primary School, Bilborough

This was our most challenging task yet – three assemblies is one afternoon, each for different age groups in the school – Phew, that was hard work, but we did it! In these assemblies our acting skills were put to the test in our mini role play about friendship. Don’t think we’re ready for the Oscars yet though – maybe next year! The children enjoyed playing spot the difference with each other and liked our picture storyboard.

The children said,

‘Everybody has different talents.’

‘Disabled people need friends too!’

The staff said,

‘The assemblies were so carefully planned to appeal to every age group in our school.’

‘The assembly was so interactive that the children had fun learning!’

Lynne Duckett and the Nottingham City SENCO Conference

One For All led one of many inclusion workshops in this conference. In this instance we were not required to present an interactive workshop, but instead put our communication skills to the test in a half hour speech about the experiences of young people in education. We highlighted the positive and negative aspects of our personal experience at school, as we feel it is vital to give SENCO’s the information they need to improve their skills and sometimes the best way to do that is to simply tell them how you feel. One For All’s greatest asset is their experience.

Unfortunately Lucy had commitments at university and was unable to attend the conference but she did contribute a piece to the workshop and raised a few smiles with her tales of fun antics with her friends and mobility scooter.

Lynne told us

‘It was so good to work with One For All again and see them in a different role to the last time we met.’

SEN development officer Brohna Dart said

‘All in all SENCO’s thoroughly enjoyed the day and went away inspired!’
